Photographer Geneva Golamco recently decided to explore the unknown world of South America after living in Hanoi, Vietnam for two years in lockdown during the first quarter of the Covid-19 pandemic. Incorporating the term “slow travel” throughout her journey instead of the usual notion of backpacking. Gen opted to stay in the vibrant cities of Bogota and Medellin, Colombia for two months, fully immersing herself in the glimmering and relatively unknown cityscape of these two cities the same principle also applied during her stay in Lima, Peru before finally getting on another plane back to Asia.

“I started off my South America trip in Bogota, Colombia, This was shot somewhere downtown while crossing the street. the blurriness and busy portion of this landmark showed Bogota’s colourful character and personality from the paintings outside to the prevailing Spanish influence found in the buildings and in the everyday life of the local culture.”

“After two months of living in Bogota, I flew to the lively city of Medellin. One gloomy afternoon, the city showed another side of itself — an otherwise peaceful and quiet side that is rarely thought of when it comes to the party city of Medellin. Pink and purple hues glazed the terracotta rooftops and trees when this shot was taken, proving that there are always more sides to the story. “

“On the next leg of my journey, I found myself in the idyllic landscape of Lima, Peru. While I was walking somewhere in Barranco, I took this photo of this man, fixing what could be Butifarras (Peruvian Pork Sandwiches) in the middle of the day. The sunlight was shining on the street sign and on the man’s little stand and for me, that was the shot I needed to take otherwise, it would have been happenstance.”

“Here is a man reading the latest headlines at a News Stand somewhere in Parque Kennedy at Miraflores which is still in Lima. News Stands are becoming a rarity worldwide, a nostalgic notion of the past while everywhere else is becoming fast and modern during these unpredictable times.”

“Whenever I see this photo, This takes me back to Barranco, Lima again. It was hard to not fall in love with that part of the city; it’s got a lot of personality, culture, and history in it. Barranco has that spark of the old world charm that is bursting at the seams that is impossible to ignore and not appreciate when you’re there.”

“This whole scene caught my attention. This man’s shiny, purple robe against the faded walls of the church, how he was sitting on the end of the bench while reading off his little notebook. His attention wasn’t on anything else and this let me take a sneaky picture of him.”

“On a chilly day somewhere on Parque Kennedy in Miraflores. There is a park that would often be crowded as there are shops, historical buildings, and a church around. It’s always so full of life and nd there is always a mixture of travellers and locals which gives this area a great vibe.”

Man With Flowers in Lima, Peru – Image by Geneva Golamco, IG: ThatGirlGenx
“On the way home from Lima’s Centro, this man carried flowers with a fast gait and while the cab was moving fast, I couldn’t help but snap this shot of him — it just reminded me that there are different aspects of everyday life that we live. We’re always on the move with places to go, people to see, and for some, maybe flowers to give.”
