Black in Marine Science: Dr. Tiara Moore’s Vision for Change

by | Nov 22, 2024

The marine sciences continue to be a space where people of color navigate significant systemic barriers to entry and success. While 74.7% of today’s marine scientists identify as white, only 2.3% identify as Black.

Fortunately, trailblazers like Dr. Tiara Moore are challenging this status quo. Her work with Black in Marine Science (BIMS) is pioneering an important shift in diversity and inclusion within marine science and other STEM fields.

The ocean as a sanctuary

For Dr. Moore, the ocean is more than a subject of study; it is a sanctuary.

“The ocean always brings me a sense of clarity and belonging,” she says. “My relationship with the sea is deeply tied to Black culture. The ocean will always be the final refuge for many of my ancestors who chose to free themselves in the deep waters of the Middle Passage rather than endure a life of slavery.”

Dr. Moore was born in Philadelphia to a 17-year-old mother, who later faced incarceration. Raised by her emotionally distant grandmother in South Carolina, she found solace in books. Reading became her escape, fueling her imagination and providing hours of pleasure.

Her determination propelled her academic success. However, her journey was not without obstacles. At Hampton University, a historically Black college, most of her marine science professors were white. This highlighted the lack of diversity even in supportive environments.

As she advanced to postgraduate and postdoctoral studies, the issue became more pronounced. In many academic settings, she was often the only Black person in the room, emphasizing the systemic underrepresentation in her field.

“The higher I climbed academically, the more tokenization and racism I experienced,” recalls Dr. Moore. “Colleagues mistakenly asking me to get their coffee, carry their SCUBA gear, or point them to the restrooms highlighted the rampant bias around me. Over time, these incidents chipped away at my sense of belonging and worth.”

During her Ph.D. at UCLA, Dr. Moore faced a series of painful microaggressions. Her breaking point came when she was accidentally included in an email thread where her advisor questioned her academic abilities. This betrayal cut deeply, leaving her grappling with self-doubt and triggering a period of severe depression.

Dr. Tiara Moore leads Black in Marine Science (BIMS), a platform that empowers Black scientists. Through her work, she is advancing diversity in ocean research and STEM fields.

The emergence of BIMS

Dr. Moore’s journey toward healing involved therapy, family conversations, and a renewed commitment to her career. Ironically, her pivotal turning point came during the pandemic, which heightened awareness of systemic inequities.

Inspired by the supportive response to the first #BlackBirdersWeek, Dr. Moore launched #BlackInMarineScienceWeek. The movement began when she tweeted, “Hey, where’re the other Black marine scientists at?”

The response was immediate and overwhelming. No longer feeling alone, Dr. Moore got to work. She created an online community that disrupted the isolation many Black marine scientists experience.

That first virtual BIMS Week grew into an annual global gathering and a year-round nonprofit organization. It champions diversity and Black voices in marine science. Today, BIMS offers a platform for Black scientists to share their research, build professional networks, and advocate for increased representation and ocean justice.

One of BIMS’ most impactful initiatives is BIMS TV, a YouTube channel that features Black marine scientists from around the world. These scientists discuss relevant ocean topics and pressing environmental concerns.

“Our goal is to change people’s perceptions of who is a scientist,” Dr. Moore explains. “Through BIMS, we aim to break stereotypes and show young Black kids that getting involved in marine science is attainable and exciting.”

Another program, BIMS Immersion initiative, allows Black students to obtain free SCUBA certification. By eliminating barriers to entry, Dr. Moore makes marine science more accessible to everyone.

Why BIMS advances diversity to fight for environmental justice

Dr. Moore believes diversifying marine science is key to advancing environmental conservation. Black communities often face disproportionate impacts from ocean degradation, climate change, sea-level rise, and pollution. She envisions a future where Black scientists lead research and community members advocate for meaningful change.

Through BIMS, Dr. Moore is shifting this narrative. The organization connects underserved communities to critical research and provides tools to influence policy. The recent launch of Ocean Justice AI is a significant step in empowering these efforts.

Dr. Moore’s journey highlights resilience and the power of community. With Black in Marine Science, she has created a space where Black scientists feel empowered, supported, and included. Her story shows that diversity in science is not just about representation—it is essential for fostering inclusive innovation.

By redefining belonging in marine science, Dr. Moore is paving the way for future generations. Her work inspires a reimagining of who can lead, thrive, and make an impact in scientific discovery.
