Singer-songwriter, actor, and America’s Got Talent star, Brian Justin Crum lends his melodic voice to #30Voices30Days.

Growing up in San Diego, CA Crum knew from a very young age he knew his life was going to be different from all the other boys in his classes.  At just 17 years old, he got his start on Broadway in Wicked and he was off to the races. From the Pulitzer Prize winning “Next to Normal” to QUEEN’s rock theatrical “We Will Rock You” (where he got to perform alongside original band members Brian May and Roger Taylor).

Turning towards the Pop music scene, his first single “Show Me Love” reached #2 on the Billboard Dance charts and was named in the top 10 dance records of 2017 alongside Rihanna, Dua Lipa and Ed Sheeran. He became a viral sensation with his cover of Radiohead’s “CREEP” on America’s Got Talent which has amassed over 100 Million views online and “Never Enough” which entered the iTunes Pop Charts.

Crum spoke intimately with Gurus founder and publisher, Derek Warburton about what it means to be a part of the inaugural #30Voices30Days initiative.

Who is the true you?

At my core I’m still a sensitive little boy who cares deeply about those around him. Growing up queer takes a toll on us and we build the walls to protect our young selves, hiding the unique qualities we have in order to protect. But the true me is full of excitement and is always dancing or making up silly songs… anything to make the people I love smile.

What is your passion?

Storytelling. Interpretation. I love infusing myself into music and allowing myself and others to connect. I think that’s what makes me feel the most WHOLE… creating an environment where people from all different walks of life can see each other and share in a collective consciousness.

When do you feel the most authentic?

When I’m on stage, fully cracked open. Telling stories and sharing moments of my life. It’s the most fully realized version of myself.

Why is it important for YOUR voice to be heard?

I think all queer folks have a very important voice that deserves to be heard. The more we can all share our stories openly and create room for others to share their, the more we will soften to one another. I’ve been lucky over the years to share my story and am blessed that it’s reached so many people. I’m in a time in my life though where I want to focus more on listening and lifting other people voices. Mines has been heard and I’m grateful for that… now I want to hear from others!
