Award-winning filmmaker and renowned international makeup and hair artist Ilise Harris is making waves with her compelling debut documentary, Your Roots Are Showing—a raw, timely, and empowering film that follows the growing global community of women who are redefining beauty by embracing their natural gray hair.

The next public screening takes place June 10th at New York’s 92nd Street Y, as part of its “Spark Your Health” programming. The film’s message is especially resonant post-pandemic, when salon closures prompted many women to confront their gray roots—and, ultimately, reimagine them as symbols of authenticity and empowerment.
What began as a necessity soon became a movement, supported by a passionate online collective known as the Silver Sisters. Ilise Harris captures this next-wave feminist revolution with stunning visuals, personal “hairstories,” and interviews with beauty insiders. Women across generations and cultures share their stories of pushing back against toxic dye culture and outdated standards that equate youth with worth.
Through self-recorded footage and interviews sourced from around the globe, Harris presents not only a cultural moment—but a profound transformation. Her film challenges the narrative of beauty, disrupts sexism and ageism, and celebrates the choice to let one’s roots show.
“OMG!! Brilliant, Ilise! You’ve created a documentary that serves history and women’s liberation, and that’s no small feat.”
— Donna DeMari, fashion and equine photographer, and the first woman to shoot the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit
The June 10th screening at 92NY will feature a post-film panel with Harris, Silvering Beauty founder Alexis Eizinas, Melissa Crispell of Pure Essentials, and Spark Your Health director Katera Kapoor.
