From Communist Poland to Miami Runways: The Wild, Winding Journey Behind Ania Collections

by | Aug 11, 2025

How Agnieszka S. Turned Fear Into Fashion and Built a Brand on Authenticity, Artistry, and a Whole Lot of Leather.

Some people plan their lives in neat, linear paths. Others, like Agnieszka S., founder of Ania, turn their lives into a quilt of bold decisions, unexpected detours, and beautifully crafted leather.

Ania —a Miami-based boutique brand of timeless leather sandals, bags, and (soon!) resort wear—isn’t just another fashion label. It’s an ongoing love letter to authenticity, a celebration of craftsmanship, and a story about what happens when you stop running from your creative truth and start walking toward it… preferably in a strappy sandal that doubles as jewelry.

“I never had an aha moment,” Agnieszka laughs. “When it came to developing my brand, it evolved organically.”

Born in communist Poland, Agnieszka’s creative instincts sparked early—“I must have been three, maybe a little older,” she recalls, “and I made my first dress for a doll in kindergarten.” That simple cloth dress was more than child’s play. It ignited a lifelong love for design—not just fashion but everything from architectural layouts to gardens and furniture.

But artistic dreams didn’t exactly align with the values of her upbringing. “My parents highly discouraged anything that had to do with art,” she says. The family fled Poland in 1983 during a time of violent protests and Soviet tanks in the streets. “I got tear-gassed once by accident during a protest as a child,” she shares. That moment—scary, surreal—would later fuel a longing for freedom, both personally and creatively.

After settling in Michigan, Agnieszka pursued a more “acceptable” path—marketing and PR. Her career took her to Washington, D.C., London, Barcelona, and Costa Rica. “I did everything to avoid designing,” she jokes. “I taught communications, opened a yoga studio, and started a catering business. But something kept pulling me back.” That “something” became impossible to ignore.

While living in Costa Rica, navigating a separation, and raising her daughter, she finally decided to lean into her dream. “I had no clue what I was doing, but I thought, I’ll design leather bags in a country where there’s no leather industry. Why not?”

In true Agnieszka fashion, she made it work. She found a workshop that used to produce bags for Coach, imported leathers from the U.S., and Ania was born.

So, what is Ania all about? One word: authenticity. “I want to go back to the way things used to be made,” Agnieszka says. “There’s so much fake in fashion today. Synthetic leather looks real, and sometimes even real leather is processed to look like plastic. I want women to see raw edges and real textures. To know it’s the real thing.”

Her designs—like her best-selling strappy leather sandals and classic weekender totes—are minimal yet striking. “I don’t want the logo to speak louder than the material,” she explains. “I let the leather do the talking.”

Even the design of the sandals is rooted in subtle empowerment. “It’s something you feel sexy in—even though it’s flat. There’s something about ankle straps… It’s like a little spark. Not in-your-face sexy, but confident-sexy.” And the brand’s color palette? Bold yet wearable. “The colors are joyful. There’s a bit of fire in them.”

The philosophy behind Ania Collections is as much spiritual as it is aesthetic. Agnieszka believes creation is essential to our humanity. “For me, creation is the ultimate expression of being human,” she says. “We’ve always made things—from jewelry to weapons—for survival and for beauty. Creation is how we express love. It’s how we build homes, raise children, find meaning.”

In fact, much of Ania’s essence is inspired by the simplicity—and scarcity—of her upbringing. “Growing up in Poland, we didn’t have stores full of clothes. You made things from what you had. My mom used to dye cloth diapers and turn them into skirts. That’s where the ingenuity came from.” Even though her mother discouraged her from pursuing a career in the arts, Ag-nieszka now sees where that creativity was inherited. “She didn’t realize it, but she passed it on.”

Ania isn’t just made for women—it’s built with women. Agnieszka’s community plays a central role in her story. Whether it’s friends helping organize a photo shoot party, women modeling the sandals using pieces from their own closets, or her teenage daughter living out the dream Ag-nieszka once had—attending Parsons School of Design in New York—this brand is deeply personal.

“I’m doing this while working full-time at the American Institute of Polish Culture. Every sample, every shoot, every bag—this has been built step by step, with support from my friends, my daughter, my tribe.”

“My vision for the future is to grow the product line,” she says. “Resort wear is a big focus right now—living in Miami, it just makes sense. But I also want to do furniture, clothing, maybe even food one day. Everything we create is designed. Everything.”

She envisions the brand expanding through curated boutiques and direct-to-consumer growth, but she’s doing it at her own pace. “Right now, I’m focused on one sandal. Not because I don’t have other ideas—I’ve designed hundreds of styles—but because I’m building this the right way. Inventory, quality, sustainability, community. One step at a time.”

As for her ultimate dream? “To create things that help women express themselves. Something classic, something real. Fashion fades, but style—that’s what women create for themselves.”

The Ania ethos: Going back to the way things were made. Real fabrics. Real leather. No shortcuts. “I’ve always drawn, built, created. Even when I was afraid, design found a way back into my life.” For Agnieszka S., this isn’t about trends. It’s about crafting something you love for years—something that feels like you.

Whether you’re stepping into her sandals or slinging one of her soft leather totes over your shoulder, you’re not just buying a product—you’re becoming part of a story. A story of courage, creativity, and coming home to yourself.

Ania celebrated the line with a photo shoot in Miami on April 24 featuring four creative women; each gifted a pair of sandals — complete with removable ankle straps that double as necklaces, bracelets, belts, or whatever your imagination dares to do. The vibe was authentic and stylish, allowing the models to raid their closets and reinvent themselves.

Each muse rocked three unique looks (the final one featuring those oh-so-versatile straps in a totally new way), creating a fashion renaissance. The whole thing felt like manifestation in motion in a gorgeous atmosphere — friends stepping up, creativity overflowing, and a little content revolution in the making. The party was the first spark in a brand evolution.
