James Charles – #30Voices30Days

by | Jun 12, 2024

Little did 15 year-old James Charles know that when began doing makeup for his friends going to high school dances, that he would become one of the most recognizable names in beauty to date.

With over 23 million YouTube subscribers, 20.3 million Instagram followers, and over 1 billion likes on TikTok; James Charles’ rise to internet fame is unparalleled. Significantly, Charles broke boundaries as CoverGirl’s Coverboy in 2016 for the first time in the company’s 55 year history at this point. From there Charles has gone on to win multiple awards including a Teen Choice Award, Streamy Award, and two People’s Choice Awards. After conquering the beauty space, most recently, Charles has entered into the music releasing two songs already this year “Call Me Back” and “Can We Just Be Friends“.

When Charles joined #30Voices30Days benefitting GLAAD, he spoke candidly with Gurus Magazine founder and publisher, Derek Warburton, about what is was like growing up in the spotlight and who we wants to become moving forward.

Who is the true you?

The true me!

What is your passion?

My passion, or quite honestly my purpose in life, is to create. I love creating ANYTHING, from makeup looks, to makeup products, to new songs, to escape room designs, to horror movie plots, to random business ideas that my friends tell me are useless. All day, every day, my brain is constantly racing and coming up with random sparks. It’s the biggest blessing in the world to get to create and watch the impact you have on the world.

When do you feel the most authentic?

I feel the most authentic when I’m able to be myself and speak my mind with no filter attached. Growing up in the spotlight has been such a blessing, but it’s also forced me to hyper focus on how I’m perceived at all times. I wish the world got to see my full sense of humor and personality more frequently, but it’s been a goal of mine to show it.

Why is it important for YOUR voice to be heard?

I’m grateful for my platform and opportunity to use my voice because I’m able to inspire so many people to be themselves. I’m a feminine guy that wears makeup, sometimes wigs and nails. Unfortunately that isn’t socially acceptable in some places around the world, and is becoming increasingly less acceptable here in our own country too. There are so many people who are stuck in those environments and forced to hide who they really are. Right now, our community is somehow, disappointingly, under more fire than ever before. We’re in constant threat of losing our rights, and violence, when most of us just want to be able to live freely. If using my voice means even ONE of those people feels inspired to say “fuck it, I’m just gonna be me”, then it’s all been worth it to me.
