Katrina Scott – The Woman Behind Shades of Melanin Hair®️

For centuries women have been measured against impossible standards of youth – from flawless skin and thick, luscious hair to bodies expected to defy time itself. Yet when the inevitable tell-tale signs of aging begin to sprout at the edges of your crown, reality sets in. The question arises, am I old? An almost reactionary response may be to pull that lonely strain out or run to the local store for box dye before anyone notices. However, time eventually catches up and that single gray strain becomes several. The 10-min root touch up becomes a monthly appointment. Weekend plans revolve around box dye or salon appointments. But what if gray wasn’t something to hide? What if it becomes something to celebrate? That is exactly the question Katrina Scott asked herself.

Whether you are starting to notice signs of silver or have journeyed to fully embrace a head of silver, Shades of Melanin Hair offers a diverse range of quality raw hair extensions. Founded in 2019 by healthcare professional and mother, Katrina Scott, Shades of Melanin was born from a mother’s desire to provide safe, ethically sourced hair products for her daughters while helping women of every generation embrace their beauty with confidence. Inspired by her daughters, Scott wanted them to grow up seeing beauty as something to celebrate – not something manufactured. A mom vigilant on sourcing quality products that would not irritate or damage the scalp. “First and foremost, I wanted my daughters to feel confident in themselves. I wanted them to go to school and feel good about their appearance, so they could focus on school,” shares Katrina. “What came after that initial goal was sourcing good products that wouldn’t damage my daughter’s hair. A lot of the hair products on the market cause a lot of damage to our hair follicles.” The result, a hair company rooted in quality and ethical practices.

After five years of trial and error, Katrina found a gap in the market. “There were not many good raw salt and pepper hair extensions available,” explains  Katrina. “Raw hair is the highest quality hair you can source for extensions. It is raw natural human hair, not chemically manufactured.” Years of research revealed an overlooked market: women embracing their gray hair had virtually no access to premium raw hair extensions that matched their evolving color. According to Yelp, searches for “gray blending” surged some 904% between 2024 and 2025. Scott responded by creating one of the industry’s first largely luxury raw salt-and-pepper collections. Available in multiple shades of gray, each extension is sourced from premium raw Cambodian and Indian hair, allowing women to add volume, length, and fullness while maintaining a beautifully natural look. From clip-ins to ponytails to custom wigs, the collection is designed to grow with women as they embrace every stage of their silver journey.

This defining moment has propelled Katrina to support women from all transitions of life – including cancer survivors. Partnering with non-profits organizations such as Survive Her – Katrina has donated over 200 Shades of Melanin Hair bundles to aide in the mission of helping women feel seen and supported.

Across social media, Hollywood, and everyday life, women are redefining what beauty looks like. Gray hair has become less a symbol of aging and more a symbol of confidence, authenticity and self-acceptance. For Katrina Scott, gray was something that didn’t need fixing – it simply needed representation. Similar to her motivation for launching the company – representation for her daughters. And now through Shades of Melanin Hair, a registered trademark business, she has transformed an overlooked market into a movement, proving that beauty doesn’t fade with age – it evolves. And for countless women finally seeing themselves reflected in the products they wear, that might be the most beautiful shade of all.
