PB BRASSERIE: A SHINING GEM IN THE HEART OF HARLEM

by | Jan 20, 2025

At Gurus magazine, we’ve had the privilege of exploring some of the finest dining and hospitality venues across the nation. While many are delightful, only a select few truly captured both our hearts and palettes quite like PB Brasserie. Situated in the heart of Harlem, just steps from the iconic Apollo Theater, this 4,500 square foot gem perfectly complements the neighborhoods rich history and vibrant culture. PB Brasserie stands out as an African-inspired steakhouse with a unique French finesse – a shining gem in the heart of Harlem.

CHEF

The seasoned restaurateur behind the concept is Harlem-bred and Senegalese-born Chef and Owner, Elhadji Cisse. Chef Cisse relocated from Senegal to New York at the impressionable age of 17. As if destined for culinary greatness, Chef Cisse spent years honing his skills under the tutelage of masterminds Daniel Boulud and Jean-Georges Vongerichten. Training at establishments such as Daniel, Vong, and Mercer Kitchen. As a result, in 2008, Chef Cisse branched out on his own, opening his first venue, Ponty Bistro in Gramercy Park. He later moved the restaurant to Harlem and opened a second entity, Renaissance Harlem. Further solidifying himself as a contender in the competitive world of culinary.

VENUE

Fortunately, for us we were able to experience Chef Cisse skills first-hand at PB Brasserie. The sprawling venue immediately captivates your attention as it is one of the largest locations in Harlem. Upon walking in you are immediately transported to a world of regal sophistication and beauty. The jewel-toned, velvet tufted furniture is perfectly balanced against the ivory marble floors and pearl walls. Candle light flickers against the royal blue and gold arch-shaped bar as you make your way to the dining hall. There is even a private room adorned with a floor to ceiling wine cellar for special occasions. A picturesque atmosphere that sets the stage for what’s to come- an unforgettable culinary journey.

FOOD

From the first glance of the menu it was clear each dish flawlessly married bold African-inspired flavors with classic French techniques, creating a dining experience that was both innovative and deeply rooted in tradition. Hence, our decision to start with their classic signature drink, Smoked PB 125 ($19), their garlic herb butter and cognac Escargot De Bourgogne ($21), and Mignotte clams on the half shell from their raw bar ($22).

Minutes later, the succulent Mac & Cheese ($20) arrived, loaded with fresh chunks of lobster throughout. It was difficult to contain ourselves as we anticipated our main courses: a perfectly char-grilled Whole Branzino ($48) with seasonal vegetables and a 16 oz Dry-Age New York Strip ($60) accompanied with Bordelaise sauce, which was quite literally the best steak we have ever had. Our choice of sides – Pommes Frites ($12) and sauteed spinach ($12) – complemented every bite. Although our hearts wanted to finish every morsel, we also wanted to leave room for dessert. Ultimately, we decided on their Chocolate Fondant, topped with strawberries and sweet creamy vanilla ice cream. As we savored the last bites of dessert, it became clear that this meal was more than just a dining experience – it was a celebration of culture, technique, and the transformation.
