Casa De Lobo speakeasy opens its doors to the public for the first time after two years. The hidden gem, discreetly positioned behind a wall of a pizza parlor in downtown Jersey City, is one of elegant secrecy – capturing the true essence of speakeasies. Originating in Great Britain, speakeasies were forbidden nightclubs that spread to the United States and became all the rage in the 1920s when liquor became illegal. The era, coined Prohibition (1920-1933), offered the finest bootlegged alcohol in secret rooms – behind legitimate businesses – for desiring patrons. In the present day, Casa De Lobo offers that element of fun and glamor with pizza or Prohibitions – if you’re fortunate enough to know which wall to approach.

Lucky for us, we chose the right wall, and after a proper vetting, we were escorted into the elusive event. The dark yet glamorous walkway opened up to a dimly-lit bar with exquisite leather seating, a luminous wolf-mural and a large tree blooming red roses – adding an extra element of excitement. At the bar, we ordered their most popular cocktails of the evening, The Wolf (Hennessy, Grand Marnier, papaya and lemon) and the Lemon Drop. Chef Darryl Harmon meticulously crafted small bites packed with a ton of flavor like Chicharron de Pollo Lollipops, Peruvian Shrimp Ceviche, Crispy Cauliflower, Snake River Farms Skirt Steak on Tostones, and juicy Burger Sliders. While we indulged, owner Cesar Alvarez continued to elevate the night with live music and a mesmerizing burlesque performance.
