Review: The Popes of Farragut Street by Melanie Maria Goodreaux

by | Nov 22, 2025

Melanie Maria Goodreaux’s The Popes of Farragut Street arrives at the Theater for the New City as a bold and emotionally charged, and deeply human portrait of faith, community and the fragile boundaries between humanity and holiness. The three-week long play unfolded like a spiritual fever, one that seamlessly blends humor, grit, and revelation.

At the center of the play is its enigmatic lead, a self-appointed “pope” whose corner street-sermons and unpredictable charisma capture both the vulnerability and resilience of the community. Goodreaux’s writing shines brightly by the way she gives voice to those often overlooked. Portraying them not just as characters but as layered, complicated, and achingly real individuals. The dialogue moves with masculinity, alternating between sharp comedic timing and moments of raw introspection.

The production’s ensemble cast delivers standout performances across the board. Each actor commits fully to Goodreaux’s world, bringing texture and urgency to the narrative. The chemistry among the performers anchors the story, especially during moments when faith and survival collide. The lead actor, portraying the “pope” is particularly magnetic. This very nature embodies a man torn between delusion, divine purpose , and the weight of the past.

The staging of the Theatre of New York City is intimate, allowing the audience to feel almost embedded within the neighborhood the play depicts. Minimal yet thoughtful set design enables the actors’ emotional work to take the center stage, while lighting shifts subtly guide the tone from streetwise realism to flashes of near-mystical resonance.

What lingers most after the curtain call is Goodreaux’s compassion. The Popes of Farragut Street does not try to nearly resolve the contradictions it presents. Instead, it sits squarely within them, inviting the audience to reckon with the messy truths of faith, hope, and community. The play is both a tribute and a challenge – a reminder that sanctity can appear in the most unexpected places, and that every person carries a gospel of their own.

A stirring, soulful production, The Popes Farragut Street is well worth experiencing, especially for anyone drawn to theater that sings with heart and humanity.  For viewing times and information, visit, https://theaterforthenewcity.net/shows/the-popes-of-farragut-street/.
