As Shanghai Art Week approaches, Rosewood Hotels & Resorts debuts Behind the Journey, a curated photographic exhibit that blends art with cultural immersion. From November 8 to 10, visitors can explore ROJO, the new arts venue in Shanghai. This exclusive exhibition features prominent Chinese artists Leslie Zhang, Wing Shya, and Li Cha. Each artist shares their journey while capturing Rosewood’s signature locales—Beijing, Hong Kong, and Madrid. Together, they offer a visual tribute to the spirit of discovery that defines the Rosewood brand.
Behind the Journey celebrates Rosewood’s philosophy of A Sense of Place. This interactive exhibition transforms each room to reflect the spirit of a city. Visitors experience each destination through stunning visuals, intricate craftsmanship, curated décor, and culturally inspired cuisine. Step by step, they journey through three unique cities, with each room capturing the character and charm of its featured location.
“Rosewood Front Row is a global culture series first introduced earlier this year at Art Basel Hong Kong to creating a multidisciplinary platform that welcomes leaders across art, design, and culture, to share their talents and insights. As the second edition of Rosewood Front Row, Behind the Journey was created to reflect on discovery of a place, blending time, geography, and local cultures into three time-capsules for visitors to experience. With a refreshed approach and perspective, the exhibition is designed to invite viewers to connect with the world,” says Joanna Gunn, Chief Brand Officer of Rosewood Hotel Group.
Rosewood partners with the Chinese creative hub LABELHOOD for this exhibition. Sean Kunjambu curates the show, creating an artistic exchange that blends Rosewood’s heritage with local expression. This collaboration enriches the cultural landscape and showcases unique talents.
“Curating the exhibition, my ambition was to craft a multisensory experience together with the talented Wing Shya, Leslie Zhang and Li Cha,” said Sean Kunjambu. “I had the pleasure of joining them on their travels – seeking to inspire with keywords and mood boards – as we closely collaborated to capture their unique perspectives on three global cities. The outcome is this collection of sublime imagery, together forming a triptych of photographic stories celebrating cultures, colors and creativity.”
Three Cities, Three Perspectives
Li Cha explores the architectural heart of Beijing, capturing the timeless beauty of its alleys, tiles, and landmarks. His images highlight both tradition and transformation, offering close-up views of the city’s unique textures.
Meanwhile, Leslie Zhang brings the tranquil spirituality of Luang Prabang, a UNESCO-protected city in Laos, to life through his muse, Ye Riqun. His photos reflect a peaceful journey through nature and tradition, capturing the cultural harmony of Luang Prabang.
Lastly, Wing Shya celebrates Madrid’s vibrant colors and energy. His photos capture the Spanish city’s passion, from the iconic reds and golds of flamenco to the warmth of its people, evoking the heart of Madrid’s culture with a hint of nostalgia.
