In the competitive world of luxury fashion and custom swimwear, independence comes with its rewards and challenges.
For Priscilla Martinez, founder of luxury swimwear brand Atelier Martinez, that journey has been an emotional rollercoaster. Yet it’s precisely this authentic experience that has shaped her into one of the most compelling voices in contemporary swimwear design.

The Reality of Being an Independent Fashion Designer
“It’s definitely an adventure… an emotional rollercoaster, to say the least,” Martinez reflects. “One day I’m on top of the world, and the next I’m crying over a manufacturer’s malfunction. But at the end of the day, it’s incredibly rewarding — I truly wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
The learning curve became clear when Martinez encountered her biggest challenge: swimwear production. After investing significant money with manufacturer On9th Street, she was left with unwearable pieces. “I was misled, and after investing a significant amount of money, I ended up with pieces that were unwearable. It was a heartbreaking learning experience,” she admits. The setback reinforced a crucial lesson: “Finding the right production partner is everything.”
From Inspiration to Custom Bikini Collections
Despite production challenges, Martinez’s creative vision remained unshakeable. Her luxury swimwear designs, inspired by everything from Vegas sunsets to getaways in St. Barts and Tulum, evolve from pure emotion and experience. The designer sketches constantly, translating feelings into fabric.

Her travel-inspired collections tell stories through swimwear:
• Santorini Collection: Mediterranean blues and whites
• Birds of Paradise: Vibrant tropical florals
• Serendipity Collection: Hand-beaded pieces with turquoise stones
• Guajira Collection: Colombian-inspired embroidery
Miami Swim Week Success: A Breakthrough Runway Show
This approach to luxury swimwear design reached its crescendo during her first Miami Swim Week show. “Phenomenal — chaotic in the absolute best way,” Martinez describes the experience. “Seeing my collection walk the runway — the lighting, the music, the models — it all came together like a dream. That show reminded me why I love what I do.”

The Miami Swim Week show became legendary for an unexpected reason. The night before, her signature white two-piece bikini arrived unusable — too small for the model. Martinez’s mother, a therapist with no professional sewing background, hand-sewed the entire beaded bikini top adorned with real turquoise stones in under 18 hours.

The piece stole the show. Models loved it, guests were obsessed, and directors called it the collection’s signature. That miraculous creation became the heart of her “Serendipity” collection, embodying everything Atelier Martinez represents: “love, resilience, and creativity.”
The Future of Luxury Swimwear: Going Global
Martinez envisions a dramatically expanded future for her luxury fashion brand. “Global. Atelier Martinez is evolving into a lifestyle brand — one rooted in sensuality, craftsmanship, and powerful feminine energy,” she explains. Her plans include elevated swimwear, ready-to-wear, home goods, and fragrance. “I want the woman who wears us to feel like she owns the moment, whether she’s on a yacht in St. Barths or at a dinner party in Malibu.”
