Mini Mukherjee’s Vision for Community Through Public Art

by | Dec 25, 2024

Society feels more divided than ever. Differences in opinion have led to public tension, affecting how many people experience joy in their daily lives. Art has always reflected societal shifts, and it remains a powerful tool for change, especially in today’s divisive political climate. This tension inspired artist Mini Mukherjee to explore themes of community, connection, and, most importantly, joy in her art series Joy Buddies.

In 2017, growing political and cultural tension was rampant in the United States. Mukherjee had made a bold leap from the finance world to art the year before, following a passion that had been trying to poke its way into her life for some time.

Apprenticing at a jeweler’s studio near her home in Los Angeles, Mukherjee picked up a welding torch in 2016 and set out to give her vision a tangible form. Her work has come to represent not only a brave departure from corporate America but also a testament to the power of following joy and using art to speak to the social dialogue of the time.

“After living through a couple of national financial crises and years of political strife, all while being an artist, I don’t get as knocked off my center as I used to,” Mukherjee says. “I have my days when I feel really down, but generally, I am the kind of person who will never fully give in to the idea that things cannot get better, even when things seem really dark.”

A foundation in empathy

Mukherjee was brought up with a strong foundation of empathy, respect, and acceptance. “My parents showed me through their actions (versus just telling me) that all cultures are valuable,” she shared with Canvas Rebel. It wasn’t until her twenties that Mukherjee came to realize that not everyone approached community with the same openness and acceptance that she was accustomed to.

Mukherjee’s open mind and heart approach has deeply influenced her work, particularly the Joy Buddies series. “I want people to feel that it’s ok to feel whatever they feel and find a way to stay connected to their heart during these really crazy times,” she told Canvas Rebel.

The themes of joy and collective resilience are present in both her abstract metal art and the Joy Buddies series. Her vibrant fire painting technique brings joy to life, and she explores new mediums like live botanicals and digital art.

“To me, joy is not just any particular face or color — it’s many faces and many colors,” Mukherjee explains. “That is what the Joy Buddies series is about. Rather than focus on what divides us, I wanted to focus on what unites us: the fiery, joyful feeling of connecting with one another.”

Surviving the Darkness

Mukherjee is preparing a new body of work for release in Spring 2025. She is working with a team of award-winning artists to bring her vision to life. Overcoming the uncertainty of the pandemic and becoming a mother has further fueled her drive to build a more united world through her creative efforts.

“I come from a family of ambitious people, but becoming a mother during the pandemic pushed me into a gear I didn’t know I had until we had our daughter,” Mukherjee says. She can’t share too much yet about her upcoming work, but as her art evolves into new mediums, her values remain unchanged.

Mukherjee sees the Joy Buddies series as a way to confront and thrive despite the darkness that often surrounds society in times of political division. Since debuting her art in galleries, she’s created public art installations and contributed pieces to private collections across the country.

As her audience grows, Mukherjee hopes joy will spread. “I am hopeful that this new Joy Buddies collection helps others discover their own version of joy,” she shares. “I also believe that working more collaboratively as a team will make work a public testament to the joy and connection I want to see more of in the world for this next generation of creatives. We are stronger when we come together.”

The pandemic taught the world about resilience, and the increasingly divisive times that followed only deepened that lesson. Through her art, Mukherjee is creating a vision for a more connected, inclusive world. She highlights the transformative power of public art. “It will be a win for us if even one human feels less lonely from connecting with the Joy Buddies in this upcoming body of work.”

“The Joy Buddies series is so special to me,” she says. “Since their debut, they continue to inspire others, and they help me see the best in others and thrive as a wife, mother, and artist working to serve this world with love and creativity.”
