Women Don’t Talk about Incontinence, Let’s Change That

by | Nov 29, 2024

Incontinence, or bladder leakage, affects millions of women but remains a topic shrouded in silence and embarrassment. “The reality is that many women suffer in silence, unaware of how treatable incontinence can be if addressed early,” Gloria Kolb, co-founder and CEO of Elitone, explains. This condition not only affects physical well-being, but since many women must adjust their lives to accommodate this hidden issue, it also negatively impacts their emotional and social health.

Incontinence is defined as the involuntary loss of bladder control. It can manifest in different forms, from occasional leakage during sneezing or coughing, known as stress incontinence, to sudden, overwhelming urges to urinate, referred to as urge incontinence. These symptoms can be deeply distressing, disrupting day-to-day activities and leading women to isolate themselves out of fear and shame.

Stress incontinence is often associated with weakened pelvic floor muscles that act as a support system for the bladder and can become compromised after childbirth or as women age. “Many women believe this is just something they have to live with, but that is far from the truth,” Kolb emphasizes. By raising awareness, Kolb hopes to encourage women to seek treatment earlier rather than suffering needlessly.

Understanding Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a condition that occurs when the pelvic floor muscles weaken. As they do, organs such as the bladder or uterus shift and press against the vaginal wall, causing pressure that can lead to stress incontinence, especially during activities like exercise or lifting heavy objects. According to recent studies, one in four women over 40 will experience some degree of POP, with the risk increasing in women who are obese or have undergone multiple vaginal deliveries.

Because POP tends to progress slowly, many women only discover they have POP during their annual pelvic exams. While some may not notice the signs right away, others experience telltale symptoms, such as leakage during physical activities, pain during intercourse, and even the sensation of tissue protruding from the vaginal opening. “Many of these symptoms can be alleviated or even reversed with proper pelvic floor exercises,” Kolb points out, “particularly if the condition is caught early.”

The importance of early diagnosis and treatment

Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial in managing incontinence and preventing its progression. Pelvic floor exercises, such as Kegels — which involves repetitively lifting and holding the pelvic floor muscles — can significantly help restore muscle strength and bladder control. However, only a quarter of women do these exercises correctly. “It’s common for women to push outwards instead of pulling the muscles inward and upward,” Kolb explains. This improper technique can reduce the effectiveness of the exercises, making it harder to see improvements.

For women with more severe or persistent incontinence, there are other nonsurgical options available. Pessaries, for example, are small, removable devices inserted into the vagina to provide extra support to the pelvic organs. These devices can help alleviate symptoms without the need for invasive surgery.

In cases where nonsurgical methods are insufficient, surgical interventions may be necessary. While pelvic mesh was once a common surgical solution for prolapse, the FDA banned it in 2019 due to safety concerns. Today, other materials and techniques are available to help women regain bladder control and reduce prolapse symptoms.

Kolb advises women to “Consider these options carefully and to always start with the least invasive treatments before moving toward surgery.”

Breaking the silence

Despite the availability of treatments, the stigma surrounding bladder leakage persists, leaving many women reluctant to seek help, but this silence only worsens the problem. Untreated incontinence can worsen over time, which is why it’s important to advocate for open conversations about the condition to help eliminate the shame and embarrassment that many women feel.

Kolb stresses that incontinence should never be ignored, even in mild cases. “You should always treat it because ignoring the issue will only worsen it over time,” she says. With the right interventions, many women can regain control over their bladder health and lead more confident, active lives.

The key to tackling bladder leakage lies in education and support. Women need to understand that this is a common condition that can be treated and should feel empowered to discuss their symptoms with healthcare providers without fear of judgment and live more confidently without the constant worry of leaks or accidents.

The future of incontinence care

As research in women’s health continues to evolve, innovations in incontinence care are emerging. The future is optimistic for non-invasive treatments, which provide effective solutions without surgery.

Wearable devices and biofeedback technology offer exciting new ways to help women strengthen their pelvic floor muscles and monitor their progress. At the same time, advancements in personalized medicine could pave the way for more targeted treatments.

Collaborative efforts between healthcare providers, researchers, and technology developers drive these innovations, ensuring women can access various treatment options. Kolb hopes that by continuing to educate women and providing them with the tools they need to manage incontinence, “we can move toward a future where this condition is no longer stigmatized.”

Changing the way women talk about incontinence and encouraging early intervention can help more women reclaim their lives and restore their confidence, starting with open conversations, greater awareness, and a commitment to seeking treatment rather than suffering in silence.
